Savannah National Wildlife Refuge’s 7th annual Youth Hunt & Learn Weekend for turkey is scheduled for March 27 – 29, 2020. This structured, educational hunting event focuses on the development of turkey hunting skills and conservation knowledge. Participating youth will have the opportunity to be involved in a variety of skill – based and conservation – focused programs throughout the weekend. No prior turkey hunting experience is required to participate, and loaner hunting equipment (including guns)) will be available on a first – come, first serve basis.
Participants will be selected by random drawing, and a mentor will be assigned to each child. Also, one adult guardian per child will be required to attend the entire program. Adult guardians and mentors will not be allowed to shoot turkeys.
All instructional programs will be conducted at refuge facilities. All hunting will take place on a portion of the former Solomon Tract (Oak Grove Bluff)) located in Chatham County, Georgia, as well as refuge lands located along the Savannah River.

(DEADLINE: February 15, 2020) Only one application may be submitted per youth hunter; applicants who apply more than once for the hunt will be rejected. Only complete and correct applications will be included in the drawing. Only selected applicants will be notified following the drawing. A $5.00 application fee will be required at time of application submission. Accepted payment methods are credit/debit cards (call 843.784.9911 to pay by phone), check or money order (made payable to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service). Hunt permits are non-transferable, valid only for the individual whose name has been drawn.
APPLICATION INFORMATION & INSTRUCTIONS
Please read the following rules and regulations before completing the permit application for the Youth Hunt and Learn Weekend on Savannah National Wildlife Refuge. The hunt will be limited to a maximum of 10 youth hunters. All applications must be received at the Savannah Coastal Refuges Complex (SCRC) office by February 15, 2020 to be entered in the drawing which will be held on February 20, 2020. Eligibility Requirements: Applicants for the Youth Hunt & Learn Weekend must be 15 years of age or younger. Hunters must have passed a state approved hunter education course (from any state) and present their hunter education card/certificate upon check-in. SPECIFIC HUNTING REGULATIONS
All state hunting regulations will apply in addition to more restrictive, specific refuge regulations which are listed. Each youth hunter (15 and under only) must be accompanied by one adult who will participate in a non-hunting capacity. The supervising adult must be 21 years of age or older, and must remain in sight and normal voice contact with the youth hunter. All selected youth and guardians must arrive at the Savannah NWR Visitor Center (694 Beech Hill Lane) Friday, March 27, 2020 between 4:00 and 5:00 p.m. for check-in, followed by evening programs and activities. During the hunt, youth will be placed in one of ten pre- determined sites on the refuge. Hunters may harvest up to 3 gobblers Only shotguns with #2 shot or smaller, in accordance with state regulations, will be authorized for hunt. Use of slugs or buckshot is illegal during the turkey hunt.
